Herpes Simplex

About Herpes

Human herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection occurs as a primary often asymptomatic infection followed by subsequent recurrent outbreaks.  Once an individual is infected, HSV persists in sensory ganglia for the life of the patient, recurring with lessening immunity.  The symptoms include grouped vesicles on a reddened patch. These painful, fluid-filled blisters or sores, occur on the mouth, genitals, or buttocks. These blisters can break open and become open sores. Along with the sores, individuals may experience flu-like symptoms like fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, painful urination, and muscle aches.  However, many people have no symptoms at all, but can still transmit the virus.  Transmission occurs when a carrier sheds the virus but lacks lesions through skin-skin, skin-mucosa, mucosa-skin contact.

HSV-1:  Typically causes oral herpes, resulting in cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth

HSV-2:  Often causes genital herpes, leading to sores on the genitals, buttocks, or anus.
