Seborrheic Dermatitis (Dandruff)
About Seborrheic Dermatitis (Dandruff)
Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common chronic dermatosis with redness and scaling occurring in regions with most active sebaceous glands, such as the scalp, beard, eyebrows, the pre-sternal area, and sometimes body folds. Mild scalp seborrheic dermatitis causes flaking, ie dandruff. Seborrheic dermatitis is also known as cradle cap in infants and pityriasis sicca (dandruff). SD may be associated with psoriasis or be a pre-psoriasis state in which the patient later develops psoriasis. Nutrient deficiencies, overgrowth of Malassezia furfur fungus, immunosuppression, lowered immunity, increased stress, hormonal shifts, food sensitivities, and dry skin can be contributing factors.
Treating Seborrheic Dermatitis | My Approach:
My holistic approach to addressing seborrheic dermatitis involves improving the immune system, addressing nutrient deficiencies, ruling out predisposing illnesses, addressing yeast & fungus, supporting the skin barrier, and balancing hormones. I use diet, lifestyle, herbs, nutritional supplements, and topical formulations as treatment options.
